How to BUILD your OWN HomeGYM

I get asked all the time about my home gym.

Where did I get everything? What's a good place to start?  What do I need MOST?

And so here's my answers to those questions...

1) What do I need to start a homegym?
If you are in a small space, I'd recommend 2-3 sets of dumbbells ranging from 5-20# each.  As well as a resistance band and a superband (smaller one). I buy most of my dumbbells from garage sales, thrift stores, play it again sports, craigslist, etc but you can also find great sales at department stores like Academy Sports, Dick's Sporting Goods, Walmart, and Target!

I started with these 3-4 items and eventually added in a foam roller for sore muscles.  You can easily complete programs like sheSTRENGTH, Body Beast, and 21-Day Fix with these items from home.

2) What do I need to add to my gym after the initial set of equipment?
I'd highly recommend a barbell. Some metal and rubber plates.  I got my first barbell from uncle who had it in the back of his old garage. But you can typically find barbells people aren't using. The men's bar is typically 45 pounds and has a thicker base. The women's bar has a thinner grip area and is 35# typically.  In the weight lifting world this is 15 kilos and 30 kilos.  Just make sure they aren't bent or too rusty.  I bought my plates from garage sales actually and got really lucky with my rubber plates--scoring them at a garage sale too. But typically some 5, 10 and 2.5# metal plates are good so you can increase the weights you lift in 5# increments.  As for the rubber plates get heavier ones like 25# and 45# sets.  I recommend researching the best prices on those on amazon.com or Roguefitness.com
usually you can find good deals on those two sites. I also told our local thrift store guy to keep an eye open for weights and plates that may come in...so he has my number to call if somebody does drop them off I can have first dibs.

3) I then would recommend a good mat for the floor. I bought my rubber mats at a local farm store. We bought stall mats. 3/4" thick.  I placed them together side by side to make a small workout space for me to drop my weights and to do sit ups and burpees, etc on.  I also invested in a soft mat to also complete those movements on because the rubber mat can get dirty quickly AND really hurts when you do sit ups on it sweaty...(road rash anyone??)

4) After that we worked to build a squat rack. My husband can weld so he welded together some metal we found from a local factory selling it and we pieced the rig together with a pull up bar.  I got the measurements directly off of www.roguefitness.com
I did order the J-Cups to rest the bar on, from Rogue, to make sure they were strong enough to hold the bar or weights we placed on it.  And from there I just added piece by piece. Keep in mind this has been over the course of 8-9 years. We bought 2 kettlebells, 2 dynamax medicine balls, a spin bike, a treadmill, a set of rings, a rope to climb, a GHD sit up machine, a rower...and next on my list is an Assault bike. We bought some more accessory like stuff as well--made our own sandbag, my dad welded a sled, a friend welded a pull sled, my husband built a box for box jumps (20x24x30").  A slam ball. An abmat for sit ups.

And the list goes on. :)

The whole first year of business as an entrepreneur is...

Wow!
Can't believe it has been a year since I felt called to expand my fitness passion to those all over the world. Well...at that time, I honestly didn't know that would happen but it has.  And as I think back over the past year, here are my initial thoughts...suggestions, advice.

  • The whole first year of business as an entrepreneur is FINDING YOURSELF.  I saw the people around me were stay at home mom's...and had found success in Beachbody coaching by marketing and working with other stay at home mom's...so that's what I did, or at least tried to do.  And I tried to push it. I tried to market myself as those type of women. But quickly realized I am not a typical stay at home mom.  Yes...I stay home, for the most part. I work from home. BUT I am not a relatable stay at home mom. I come across as intimidating to some. I didn't have a life-changing story of fitness because I lost all my baby weight. And I didn't come from an overweight background to be able to understand or empathize with those who had.  So I struggled.
  •
  • The whole first year of business as an entrepreneur is HARD WORK. Because so much of the first year is getting the word out. Finding who you are. Learning about your brand and who you are most relatable too. It is finding a social media voice that fits your purpose.  It is doing all the behind the scenes preparation, planning, trying and failing.  It is hard word because there is not a lot of instant success or financial freedom or visible proof of your efforts that first year. I have stayed up late, gotten up early, passed up social activities to work the grind because I believe so firmly in what I have to offer and where I'm heading.  And yet there are days when I say, "what AM I doing??? Will this ever work??"
  • The whole first year of business as an entrepreneur takes HEART.  You literally have to put your blinders on.  Put your nose to the ground and work. You can't compare your work and fruits of your labor to others.  You have to keep pushing. Even when it's tough and doesn't seem worthy..like you won't make it.  You show up. And you celebrate showing up. Daily.  Much like when starting a fitness program...you may not see the fruits of your effort for weeks, even months...It's about belief and effort.
  •
  • The whole first year of business as an entrepreneur is EXCITING! All the sudden this new dream comes to fruition and has legs and you are off and running.  It is meeting new people. It is trying new things. It is attending and networking at trainings.  It is late nights listening to YouTube channels about how to improve your business. It's conference calls with prospective clients.  It's volunteering at events to get your name out there and show your heart and purpose for this business.  It's making phone calls and writing letters.  It is becoming part of a whole world of dreamer's and doer's out there who are working the grind, the same as you, with the same purpose and hope. It is finding people who work as hard as you and finally feeling understood and not demeaned for your crazy ideas and "head in the clouds" tactics and conversations.
  •
  • The whole first year of business as an entrepreneur is about EXPERIENCE. It is finding out who your real friends and supporters are. It's learning how to communicate with those near you about the sacrifices you have to make at first to have a better life in the near future.  It's about trying new things. Making mistakes. Learning from them.  It's attending events with people you've never met but going anyway, to be a part of the experience.  It's signing up for awarded trips ahead of time, adding them to your goal/dream board for the next year of business.

  • The whole first year of business as an entrepreneur is JUST THE BEGINNING. I feel like NOW, just NOW I am finally beginning the see the fruits of my labor.  You work day to day as an entrepreneur. The sum of the whole isn't really added up until you step back at a monumental moment and say, "wow! Look what I did..."
1) I've trained clients in Mexico, China, India, Canada, and Hawaii...

2) I've been able to reconnect with hundreds of old clients I had no way to train again after we moved...until now.

3) I've been able to share my voice for love of strength training and how it is mis-marked by the fitness industry as "bulking"...

4) I've been able to voice my passion for making fitness a lifestyle change, not a quick fix.

5) I've been able to fundraise for 3 special needs adoptions, host an online cancer fundraiser with fitness, help set-up a fund for a young girl needing traveling funds for her doctor's appointments weekly out of town, host a fundraiser women's crossfit event at a local CrossFit gym to raise funds for Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Reno County, design fitness apparel to sell for my sheSTRENGTH program and raise funds for Girls on the Run, International.

6) I've been able to add $500/month to $500/week now to our savings account the past year as my business has grown--which equates to paying off debt quicker AND fills a need within me to contribute financially.

7) I've been able to earn Jerad and I a trip to Dominican Republic next spring.

8) I've been able to design my own personalized programming business called shestrength.com

9) I've been able to show other women, like myself, how to grow their own fitness business, and set goals just like mine for a year from now.

10) I've been able to inspire so many women and men to change their lifestyle to that of a healthier one--for their own personal health, for their families, for their futures.  This has come through 5k's, half marathon training, powerlifting meets, CrossFit events, losing 40 plus pounds and keeping it off, doing their first pull up....and on and on.

Living the Life...

My husband and I like to use our gym time as a way to connect in our otherwise loud, chaotic world.  Even if it's just him sitting in a chair while I lift and chat...or me lying on the mat stretching while he presses out some bench weights...it's still "our time."  Our children know this and typically honor that.  Today, though, for some reason, no one can seem to get a grip on life.

Tears.
Screaming.
Hitting.
Fighting.
Complaining.
WAAAHHHH...

Jerad and I were sitting outside, sweating to death, but trying to get a few minutes to catch up since he's working so much lately...at work, on the house, etc.  And the dog is barking in her pen because she wants out. Autum's screaming through the indoor window because Leah didn't fold half of the clothes. Blake's throwing his toys against the wall in his room echoing outside because he is supposed to be taking a nap after getting in trouble at church.

And Jerad pulls his sunglasses down and says, "this is the life I tell you!"

And we both just died laughing.  Seriously.  Somedays.

  • I am tired from working really hard for my team, on my fitness business, and managing the house alone the past few days.
  • I was told this morning at Sunday School for the 4 or 5th time that no one knows how to handle Blake in Sunday School..."can I figure something out?"
  • We had a bout with 2 wasps getting ready for church that lead to what you'd think was an earthquake in the girl's bathroom and a requirement to "do #2 in town at a gas station or church" because of FEAR.
  • The kids were tired from being outside all day the past 2 days and up late at night swimming and watching movies.
And it all came to a head this afternoon in our desperate attempt to just "chat."

So I am sitting here diffusing my frustration and anger into my writing...while my kids are all crying in their rooms because I made the executive decision we all needed naps today. We weren't going swimming. And that was that.

So for now, between screams of "you're the worst mom ever" I am sipping on my cold tea, chatting with Jerad...and trying to find the blessings in this day.  Because they have to be there somewhere, right?!?

Ha!
Moving on...
Don't let this picture perfect photo FOOL you...

Twins Extreme Weight Loss Results

See Sandi and Mandi's Transformation through using home fitness programs!!  Sandi used to run 5 miles a day and couldn't shed the weight and Mandi had tried every pill and patch out there with no luck...and they both needed a program to complete at home because of their husband's jobs and having young kids.  The results they earned were astounding...and now they want to share their results with YOU. Both women learned the value of strength training for fat loss efforts after plateauing in their previous efforts. Frustrated, discouraged and worn down, they approached me about changing up their workout plans.  Within weeks people were commenting on their transformations.

After having their lives so completely changed, they have decided to pay it forward and are training themselves to open their own online fitness businesses AND studying for personal training certifications.  I am SO proud of how far they have come and where they are headed with their passion for helping others.

Stay at Home Mom FInds Success in Online Fitness Business

Holly was the first girl to come on board this crazy online fitness train with me a year ago!  One year ago. Wow hard to believe it's been a year already.  She has worked so hard to get her fitness business off the ground as her own personal CEO.

She's a stay at home mom to 3 boys and wife to Brian. They live on a farm in rural Kansas and raise cattle. She decided to say yes to becoming her own CEO of a fitness business and hasn't looked back. She loves running, lifting weights and most of all, helping other people do the same. The doors this business has opened for her are numerous and I can't wait to hear what this next year brings. Here's her story and my tribute to her and her impact she's had in so many lives.

If you are interested in starting your own fitness business, pursuing your dreams of being a personal trainer or athletic coach...here's where to begin. I am currently mentoring several women in their pursuit of a fitness career using online coaching as a way to build online clientele as they study.

Couch to 5K + Abs

Starting June 27, my coaches and I are hosting a 21-day Couch to 5K training program.  BUT we are adding a twist in it because of my love for strength training and the necessity it is to improving your running and decreasing your running injuries...we are adding 3-4 days a week of home fitness strength work PLUS continuing on with our 5 day abs challenge workouts and adding those in 2 days a week.  PLUS we will have daily meal plans provided to take the guesswork out of meal prep.  AND ask you to stay accountable to the work daily, provide modifications to your time or physical needs.  PLUS throw in a super-food recovery shake for those quick breakfast or post-workout refueling meals.

Not a runner?  That's ok...just do the strength workouts.
Want to focus on diet? That's ok...just do the meal plans and portion containers/macro count.
Want to just do the running?  That's ok...just do the running and abs training.

There are many options to participating! So don't let any of these be an excuse.

How to Count Macro's

In my Facebook post this past week I had people asking me about different topics they wanted me to cover...one was how to count macro's for diet.  I give my 2 cents on this, and the approach I provide for the majority of my clients in dieting this way.  There are several options and a lot of it depends on your particular preferences and motivations.  I will expound on this tomorrow with my post about the cycles of dieting and fat loss.

But here is more information in regards to the options I mention above--> Portion Control

Making daily choices to better your health helps with longevity in sticking with a plan, makes it more enjoyable and gets you long-term results because it becomes a lifestyle.  You do NOT have to be all or nothing. Most of my clients I train in 1-2 of these areas of nutrition stick with it for good...I hear back from them a year later and they are still eating this way and still having results.

I will be releasing information tomorrow about my next nutrition group starting soon!  Tune into: Anna M Woods Fitness on Facebook or SnapChat: home.gym to hear how you can be 1/25 people allowed in this group.
